Installation of Bracket CowBuddy®
Fly Control System
Congratulations on your purchase of the CowBuddy® fly control
system. We really appreciate your confidence in our product. You are
going to benefit from years of increased profit, increased herd weight,
and a decrease in the transfer of many disease organisms. Furthermore,
your cattle are going to enjoy a reduction in stress, aggravation,
distraction, torment, disruption of grazing pattern, and illness brought
upon them by various annoying insects.
Installation (Bracket Design)
To realize the best function of your new CowBuddy®
fly control system, the unit must be correctly
installed. The unit should be mounted on two heavy wood corner posts,
using 1/2" lag bolts and washers. The lag bolts will need pilot holes
drilled into the wood posts at the proper locations. Longer lag bolts or
machine bolts may be needed if the posts are partially deteriorated.
The height of the unit may be adjusted for the size of the animals
involved. The tallest animals should have at least 6" of vertical
clearance to prevent possible injury to the animal or damage to the
unit. A horizontal level should be used when installing the unit to
insure that the liquid will be distributed evenly from one end of the
liquid tray to the other.
Additional bracing may be necessary with larger, more aggressive stock.
Posts may be set in concrete, braced overhead, or braced in a lateral
manner. Obviously, the unit is not designed to individually overcome the
strength of a large bull.
Fencing should be configured in a manner such that all cattle are
compelled to walk under the unit several times per day to reach water
and/or shade. You may consider allowing cattle several days to adapt to
any new path before installing the CowBuddy® on the posts.

Operation
The operation of the CowBuddy®
fly control system is very simple. After
correctly installing the unit, remove the tray cover, and fill the tray
with one pint of an appropriate non-corrosive insecticide liquid (for
example a Permectrin® product) with a veterinarian grade mineral oil
base. Then, replace the tray cover. To prevent irritation to the cattle
hide and promote longer rope life, we do not recommend the use of diesel
fuel. New derby ropes may require additional liquid during the course of
the first day of use.
Remember, you are ALWAYS legally responsible to carefully follow ALL
directions and environmental guidelines with respect to the use of
insecticides, the use of insecticides on animals (including withdrawal
times), and the proper disposal of chemical containers.

Servicing the Liquid Tray
The frequency of servicing the liquid tray with new material is not just
a function of time and evaporation. It will also be affected by weather
conditions and the number of cattle using the CowBuddy®. An
ordinary piece of paper may be pressed against the ropes to determine
the presence of the insecticide liquid or you may want to try recharging
the unit on a weekly basis during fly season. The unit may be recharged
by adding one pint of liquid to the tray.
Maintenance
The CowBuddy®
fly control system is an extremely durable piece of
equipment, designed for many years of service. However, it was not
design for use in corrosive environments, for the use of corrosive
liquids, or excessive mechanical stress. Replacement rope sets, made of
5/8" fine braided rope, may be ordered from the manufacturer or your
local dealer. In freezing weather, the ropes should be tied up or
removed to prevent brittle damage. The life of the unit may also be
extended by storing the unit indoors, when insects are relatively
inactive in your region.

Installation (Hanging Design)
To realize the best function of your new CowBuddy®
fly control system, the unit must be
correctly installed. The unit should be suspended from a strong
overhead beam, using heavy 5/16" chain or steel cable, which may be
attached to the unit using 3/8" machine bolts, fender washers, and
aircraft nuts. To accommodate larger herds, several units may be
suspended in tandem across a wider opening.
The height of the unit may be adjusted for the size of the animals
involved. The tallest animals should have at least 6" of vertical
clearance to prevent possible injury to the animal or damage to the
unit. A horizontal level should be used when installing the unit to
